For those just following, and for those looking for some entertaining reading material, let me (re)introduce myself. My name is Meagan Cann, and as you may have gathered, I am the mother of the unique retail + design co-op, Workspace Collective. The story starts back during the summer of 2015. I was nomadically living with one foot out of Brooklyn's hipster neighborhood of Williamsburg, and the other foot dipping into my hometown in Danbury. A new relationship was flourishing, and my career in sustainable fashion was growing, with partnerships and collaborations coming from every direction. One summer night in Danbury including a few drinks with friends, turned into a conversation about a grant that the Cultural Alliance was offering for projects based on growing the arts and the community, and how I should look into it, based on my background in artisan made fashion.
The following day turned into countless searching for this grant, yet was not finding the right information. A Facebook message went out to my dear friend, asking to forward me literally ANY information she had on this so I can see if this was the move for me. When she did, it became clear to me that the deadline for this grant was THAT evening! I hunkered down by my laptop, let the ideas and creativity flow, and formulated a proposal to build a retail space that fostered relationships between customer and designer. It was important to me that the designers were carefully selected, in that they could design and produce from a workbench in the shop, where customers would be able to really understand how things were made.
So that's where it all began.
Almost a year in business, and I've been warmly embraced by a vibrant downtown community, curious and adventurous wanderers, and various, continually expanding, extended family, up to and including my mother's neighbor's cousin's daughter's friend, and so on. The store is a distinctive boutique shopping space filled with clothing, jewelry, skin care, and home goods - all special pieces that are thoughtfully made and bring out the personality encapsulated within. Workspace Collective is a comfortable space for customers to feel at ease and connect with our designers who work form the bench and host workshops. Relationships have been formed, collaborations are currently underway, and our tight-knit collective is growing.
Now, I'm finally writing a blog for the Workspace Tribe to enjoy. Each week, I'll be filling you in with WC info, events, monthly designer highlights, and the much anticipated designer blog posts. You might see me rant about a factory collapse, or totally dive into writing about a innovative fabric made from coffee grinds, because really, there's nothing cooler than that. I'll try not to post anything about cats (an obsession I picked up while living with cat lover roommates in Brooklyn), but I can't promise anything there.
Upon the completion of our first ever blog post, I am excited to see where this will bring us on our journey to #livelifecurated.
